The NextAire project, in collaboration with the EDIAQI project, is co-organising a joint webinar as part of the EDIAQI Webinar Series, focusing on the opportunities and challenges of AI-driven sensor calibration for indoor air quality monitoring and smart ventilation systems.
Artificial intelligence and machine-learning techniques are increasingly used to improve the accuracy and reliability of low-cost indoor air quality (IAQ) sensors, helping to address challenges such as sensor drift, environmental interference and limited access to reference equipment. When combined with building automation systems, improved calibration can support more responsive, predictive and data-driven indoor air management.
At the same time, the real-world deployment of AI-supported calibration methods raises important questions. Models that perform well under controlled conditions may fail in complex indoor environments, often without transparent explanations. Sensor variability, uncertainty management and ethical considerations — including the use of IAQ data as potential proxies for occupancy — introduce additional risks. In sensitive application areas, such as healthcare or public buildings, poorly calibrated data or automated responses could have significant consequences and may raise regulatory considerations under the EU AI Act.
This webinar will bring together experts from EU-funded research and innovation projects to discuss both the promise and the perils of AI-driven calibration, with a particular focus on how scientific validation, transparency and human oversight can support trustworthy and policy-ready deployment.
